Web hosting provider Go Daddy (www.godaddy.com) announced on Thursday the winners of Go Daddy's .ME Scholarships, which awards ten tech-oriented students each with a $10,000 college scholarship this fall.
Launched on January 10th, the contest was open to all students who are currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in fall 2011, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have scored higher than 860 on the SAT or 18 on the ACT.
The students were selected from thousands of applicants and were given a $10,000 scholarship for tuition and books for this coming fall semester.
The scholarships come at an opportune time for the 10 students as average college tuition costs rose eight percent last year, putting higher education out of reach for many students across the country.
"I went to college thanks to the G.I. Bill," said Go Daddy CEO and founder Bob Parsons. "Having a college education can make all the difference when it comes to building a business or a career. Who knows ... we just might hire a few of our Go Daddy dot-ME scholarship winners after graduation."
The winners of the dot-ME scholarships wrote essays about their passion for technology and their drive to make a difference.
Go Daddy said it decided to hold this contest because of its interest in "helping to develop a strong workforce for the future."
The winners all had stories about leveraging the power of the Internet for academics and their plans for using technology in their future.
The Go Daddy .ME Scholarship winners are Patrick A., Midlothian of Virginia, Kryan A. of Phoenix, Lindsay B. of Laguna Niguel, Annica B. of Scottsdale, Arizona, Brian D., Boca Raton, Florida, Stephen G., Lakewood of Ohio, Katie H. of Phoenix, Michael L. of Bakersfield, California, Shavana S. of Tucson, Arizona, and James S. of Daytona Beach.
